Feldman Shepherd is pleased to announce that co-founding partner Alan M. Feldman has been honored as a recipient of The Legal Intelligencer’s Professional Excellence Lifetime Achievement Award. The award recognizes attorneys from across the legal profession who have left an imprint on the legal history of Pennsylvania during their careers. He will receive the award at a ceremony on September 9, 2020.
Mr. Feldman represents individuals in all manner of catastrophic personal injury cases, including cases arising from dangerous products, unsafe cars and trucks, automobile and tractor-trailer accidents, and construction and workplace accidents. He considers his product liability litigation, which has a particular focus on products intended for children and infants, to be among his most impactful work in cases arising throughout the United States.
Mr. Feldman has recovered nearly $100 million on behalf of four families whose toddlers were killed by tip-overs of IKEA MALM dressers, including a $46 million recovery believed to be the largest child wrongful death recovery in American history. As part of the settlements in all four cases, Mr. Feldman insisted upon additional settlement terms to help protect children, including an agreement from IKEA to only sell chests and dressers in the U.S. that meet or exceed the national voluntary safety standard for clothing storage units.
Mr. Feldman has represented families in other cases that have led to dangerous children’s products being taken off the market, including infant slings that suffocated babies and magnetic toys that caused life-threatening internal injuries when children swallowed tiny but powerful magnets which tore through internal organs. He is presently litigating two cases involving infants who died in inclined sleepers, which position babies at dangerous angles that can interfere with their ability to breathe.
A past president of The Philadelphia Trial Lawyers Association, Mr. Feldman received the Association’s 38th annual Justice Michael A. Musmanno Award in 2017, the highest honor bestowed upon any Philadelphia trial lawyer, and was the recipient of the prestigious Judge Learned Hand award from American Jewish Committee (AJC) Philadelphia/Southern New Jersey in February 2020, among other honors throughout his career. Mr. Feldman served as Chancellor of the Philadelphia Bar Association, and established the “Raising the Bar” campaign which remains active today and has raised millions of dollars in funding for non-profit legal services organizations.
“We are thrilled that our founder and leader has been recognized for his lifetime of work, including most notably his landmark efforts to improve the safety of products that threaten children. Those of us that get to work with Alan every day remain impressed with his relentless energy and drive which remain an example for all of us and lead to his exceptional results. We are all just waiting to see what he will accomplish next,” said Mark W. Tanner, co-managing partner at Feldman Shepherd.
