Attorney Mark W. Tanner recently settled a case against a Bucks County hospital and emergency room doctor who failed to treat a young woman suffering from what is known as cauda equina syndrome — a condition in which the spinal cord and nerves in the lower spine are being compressed leading to permanent nerve damage. This condition presents with a number of “red flags” which Emergency Room physicians must recognize so that prompt surgery can be performed in order to prevent serious and lifelong nerve damage. Instead, in this case, the ER staff failed to recognize these ominous signs, and sent the patient home from the hospital, significantly delaying the urgent treatment she required.
