FELDMAN SHEPHERD PRESENTS SOLD-OUT PA CLE ON “DON’T PANIC: EFFECTIVE TRIAL TECHNIQUES FOR YOUNG LAWYERS

October 24, 2019

In October, Feldman Shepherd held a “Don’t Panic: Effective Trial Techniques for Young Lawyers” CLE in Pennsylvania. Moderated by Carol Nelson Shepherd, the program was held on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2019, at the Fitler Club, in Philadelphia.

G. Scott Vezina and Daniel J. Mann began the seminar by presenting on strategies for conducting voir dire, including tips for identifying biased jurors; how and when to rehabilitate biased jurors; and techniques for eliminating biased jurors.

Mark W. Tanner and James P. Faunes then spoke on the fundamentals of opening statements. Their presentation included strategies for delivering powerful openings, how to get jurors “on board” with the theory of the case, building the damage award, developing broader themes that resonate beyond your client’s case, and planting the seed for monetary damages.

Daniel S. Weinstock and Carolyn M. Chopko addressed how young lawyers can elicit favorable evidence in a clear, concise and persuasive manner during direct examination. Their presentation included preparing and presenting witnesses, eliciting evidence in “plain talk,” and crafting and sequencing questions.

Alan M. Feldman and Bethany R. Nikitenko gave an interactive presentation on cross-examination using a cross-examination from an actual case. Areas addressed included setting up effective cross-examination when conducting depositions, incorporating technology, turning up the heat when necessary, and use of documents during cross.

John M. Dodig and Jason A. Daria closed the program with guidance on how to create and deliver a strong closing argument. They addressed proper and improper arguments; avoiding reversible error; techniques for telling a compelling story; expanding themes, tying evidence together, and giving the jury what it needs to rule in your client’s favor; and strategies for the jury charge.
